BATAAN — It’s been a while since Mac Cardona played in the playoffs, so when he got that opportunity, the former PBA scoring champion made sure he’d put on a show.
Cardona used Tuesday’s series opener against Quezon City as his personal playground when he torched the opposition for 25 points, including 14 in the final period, to carry San Juan to a 94-86 win in the MPBL Datu Cup at the People’s Center.
Cardona ended up an assist away from a double-double performance as he also pulled down nine.
But Cardona’s breakout game is just one of the few things that carried the Big J Sports-backed Knights a win away from reaching the championship round of the northern division of this tournament.
Mike Ayonayon added 17 points on a steady 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
Larry Rodriguez had a double-double performance of 13 points and 13 boards, while frontline partner Larry Muyang chipped in 11 for the Knights, who scored 60 points from inside the shaded area compared to only 42 for the Capitals.
San Juan also outrebounded Quezon City, 64-47.
