LIPA CITY — Spitfire guard Jeff Viernes scored the last five points of the Batangas City Athletics-Tanduay, who held on to keep their season and back-to-back title aspirations alive with a thrilling 76-74 win over the Davao Occidental Tigers-Cocolife early Sunday morning at the La Salle Sentrum here.
Struggling offensively all game long, Viernes still managed to come up with 20 points, including a steady 10-of-11 shooting from the foul line.
Just like Viernes, Jhaymo Eguilos also had a hard time offensively, shooting only 2-of-9 from the field, but managed to come with a double-double effort.
A key figure in last season’s championship run by the Athletics, Eguilos came away with 12 points and 17 rebounds.
The much needed contributions came from ex-pro Dennis Villamor, who knocked in 15 markers, including a steady 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Val Acuna also woke up from a slumber and tallied 15.
In keeping their post season hopes alive, Batangas City will travel back to Davao to face the Tigers on Monday.
