The “Kardashian Curse” has been one of the well-known urban myths for quite a while now which came along with the Kardashians’ affinity for dating athletes and celebrities over the years.
The “curse” goes back to when Kim Kardashian was dating NFL player Reggie Bush in the early 2000’s. And since then, it has followed the sisters and their partners like a dark cloud, damaging pro careers along the way.
Here, we look at NBA players who experienced the “Kardashian Curse”:
Lamar and Khloe Kardashian started dating in 2009, while he was a part of the Los Angeles Lakers championship teams in 2009-2010. At the peak of his career, Lamar Odom not only won titles, he also was named the league’s best sixth man in 2011. However, things took a dark turn starting when Khloe filed for a divorce in 2013. Two years later, Odom was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel after a fatal drug overdose which nearly took his life. Despite Khloe’s full support for Lamar’s recovery, she eventually re-filed for a divorce after initially withdrawing it when Lamar was on rehab. He never got to play in the NBA again.
Shortly after Khloe Kardashian’s split with Lamar Odom in 2015, she was spotted going out on dates with former NBA cager Rick Fox. However, little else came from the short relationship between them and they chose to be good friends instead up to this day.
Prior to his 72-day marriage with Kim Kardashian back in 2011, Kris Humphries was experiencing a breakout season playing for the Nets. Reports show that the split was caused by Kim’s infidelity with none other than his current husband, Kanye West. Several news outlets insinuate that the marriage was a complete publicity stunt to promote the Kardashians’ brand. Their divorce was finalized in 2013 and Kris Humphries’ last season with an NBA team was in 2017 with the Atlanta Hawks.
Younger sibling Kendall Jenner apparently shares the family’s fondness for athletes as she dated NBA guard Jordan Clarkson briefly in 2016. Both parties have moved on as they went on to other relationships. Jordan Clarkson is looking to make his maiden playoff appearance for the Cleveland Cavaliers after four moribund seasons in the NBA.
One of the league’s biggest stars on and off the court, Detroit Pistons forward Blake Griffin has been linked to Kendall Jenner after her stint with Jordan Clarkson. Apparently, the relationship was slowly looking to be serious until Griffin was traded to the Pistons in January 2018. Reports have surfaced that both of them have “cooled off” because of the geographical distance brought about by the trade. Blake Griffin is about to miss the playoffs for the first time in six years.
Chandler Parsons quickly burst into the scene as one of the league’s fastest-rising stars after being taken by the Rockets from the second round back in 2011. Parsons has been linked to Jenner since 2014, with rumors that Kris Jenner encouraged them to date each other. Both have looked to move on with different relationships. Chandler Parsons’ career has been underwhelming due to the multiple knee surgeries he’s experienced for the past few years.
Being the most talented on this list, James Harden dated Khloe Kardashian in June 2015, being on Khloe’s side while Lamar Odom is rehabbing. While he’s the current front runner for the MVP race this season, Harden described her year with Khloe as the “worst year of his life” due to the unwarranted additional spotlight. His Rockets were bounced out of the playoffs early after reaching to as far as the Conference Finals a year ago, coincidentally, while dating Khloe. She and James Harden ended their relationship in February 2016.
A former hero for the Cavaliers’ 2016 title, Tristan Thompson and Khloe Kardashian’s relationship seems to be fairly strong as time goes by, evidenced by their posts in social media. However, outside scrutiny has been all over the embattled big man because of his poor performance in 2017 NBA Finals, with the Cavs fans pointing to his love life being a distraction. While it may be the case, the couple will likely to be in it for the long haul since Tristan is the father to Khloe’s child.
After an outstanding career in college, Rashad McCants was taken 14th overall by the Timberwolves back in the 2005 NBA Draft. He would play for four years before he began dating with Khloe Kardashian. McCants would cite his brief relationship with Khloe as the main reason for his shortcomings in the NBA. By his estimation, he could’ve been making “60-70 milion” if it weren’t for the relationship. Along with his personal miscues, McCants experienced some nagging injuries along the way, further derailing his once promising career. He is currently part of the BIG3 league headed by Ice Cube and was named championship MVP for the Trilogy Team.
