NBA All-Star 2019: Jazz president, coach blast selection process after Rudy Gobert left off roster

Gobert is averaging 15 points and 12.8 rebounds this season. He’s also one of the best rim protectors in the league.

The Jazz enter play Thursday with a 29-23 record and sit in seventh place of the Western Conference standings. But, they will not have a single player representing them at the 2019 NBA All-Star Game.

Utah president Steve Starks was not happy after the final rosters were announced and said it was “non-sense” center Rudy Gobert wasn’t selected.

“Rudy deserved to be named an All-Star,” Starks wrote on Twitter. “Complete non-sense and we need more integrity and accountability. If the coaches vote (then) their ballots should be made public.”

Jazz coach Quin Snyder agreed with Starks. He said Gobert should “absolutely be an All-Star.”

“He’s one of the most impactful players in the league,” Snyder told ESPN. “This is clear, not subjective, and shows the All-Star system is flawed. We talk about defense being valued, but when we have an opportunity to reward it, we reward scoring again and again.

“Rudy is the best defensive player in the league and an offensive force when you consider his screening, his finishing and the spacing he creates with his presence.”

Gobert is averaging 15 points and 12.8 rebounds this season. He’s also one of the best rim protectors in the league.

“(Making the All-Star game) is something that I’ve always dreamed of,” Gobert said, via The Salt Lake Tribune. “I want to be part of the best group of players in the world, obviously.”

“There’s a lot of marketing, and a lot of different factors I can’t control. So, I don’t want to put my focus on that, ’cause when you do that, you usually get disappointed.”

The six-year veteran was the 2017-18 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
