NBA free agency: Enes Kanter to sign with Trail Blazers

Enes Kanter is heading to Portland.

The 26-year-old center is signing with the Trail Blazers, his agent told ESPN on Wednesday. He was released by the Knicks after the trade deadline last week.

Kanter later confirmed the move on Twitter.

“I look forward to helping the Blazers achieve the ultimate goal of competing for a championship,” Kanter said. “Excited to meet my new teammates, coaches, staff and most importantly the fans.”

The Lakers were also interested in adding Kanter, ESPN’s report says.

Portland inked Kanter to a four-year, $70 million offer sheet when he was a restricted free agent in July 2015. But, the Thunder kept him after matching the deal.

Kanter was then sent from Oklahoma City to New York as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade in September 2017.

Kanter averaged 14.4 points and 10.5 rebounds in 44 games for the Knicks this season before he was waived. He had been unhappy with his role in New York.

The Trail Blazers enter play Wednesday in fourth place of the Western Conference with a 33-23 record.
