NLEX team manager Ronald Dulatre believes it is just a matter of time before they see young players Kevin Alas and Garvo Lanete shine in the pro league.
No wonder, the Road Warriors are passing up the chance of bringing back sweet-shooting Syrian guard Michael Madanly as they allow Lanete to develop as the team’s upcoming outside gunner.
“Hindi na namin ipu-push yung pagkuha kay Madanly kasi it might take the minutes na puwede kay Garvo,” Dulatre told FOX Sports on Saturday.
“Medyo nakita niyo naman na umaangat na unti-unti yung laro ni Garvo last conference and we want to see him continue his development.”
The 35-year-old Madanly served as the Road Warriors’ Asian reinforcement for the Governors Cup last season. Last year was the first time the PBA allowed teams to bring in one Asian import to work alongside an American reinforcement.
A former top scorer in the FIBA Asia men’s championships, Madanly averaged 19.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists in last year’s Governors Cup though it couldn’t prevent NLEX from finishing 2nd to the last with its 3-8 card.
“Parehas lang kasi sina Madanly at Garvo ng laro so what we’re trying to find is a combo guard and a leader, who can also guide Kevin as we prepare him for next season’s All-Filipino conference,” explained the soft-spoken NLEX team executive.
At the moment, NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez already has a short list of American and Asian imports to choose from. — By Richard Dy
