Stanley Pringle and Terrence Romeo led GlobalPort’s blistering first-half offensive as the Batang Pier hammered hapless Star, 91-84 to grab a share of the early lead in the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Pringle, the former PBA Rookie of the Year, pumped in 24 points, going 10-of-15 from the field, with his baskets, mostly coming from jaw-dropping shots inside.
The 5-foot-10 Romeo, on the other hand, flirted with a double-double after banging in 18 points and issuing 8 assists.
The Batang Pier led by as much 21 points as they relied on their sleek running attack all throughout the game.
The Hotshots tried hard to stage a rally, closing in at 82-88, but by then, time was not on their side.
“We were able to set the tempo from the start and we were able to dictate the pace of the game,” GlobalPort coach Franz Pumaren said after the game.
Pumaren expressed satisfaction on the team’s overall defense, holding Star to just 40-percent shooting from the floor.
“We’re putting more emphasis on playing defense, it shows today and everybody is embracing their respective roles,” he added. – Richard Dy
