Ginebra rumbles past Meralco to draw first blood in Govs’ Cup Finals

Raptors return to Canada after days of celebrating NBA title

LUCENA–Barangay Ginebra opened the Finals with much aplomb, hammering Meralco with its size and choking defense to take Game 1, 102-87 in the PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-7 championship series on Friday at the Quezon Convention Center.

Dominating major departments: The Kings ruled the battle of the boards, 59-40, showed fluidity on offense with their 26-20 assists advantage and held the Bolts to just percent 39 percent shooting in the series-opening game.

Fire in his eyes: Import Justin Brownlee led Ginebra’s game-long assault after registering double-double numbers of 32 points, 19 rebounds, while adding 6 assists.

Struggling “Hulk”: Allen Durham, who entered the Finals averaging 20-20 numbers, bled for every point while playing through Ginebra’s bruising defense. He managed to finish with a near triple-double effort of 27 points and 14 rebounds and 8 assists.

Quiet support cast: While Baser Amer contributed 14 points and Mike Tolomia 10, Chris Newsome and Jared Dillinger struggled to get their rhythm in Game 1. Newsome finished with just 6 points on 3-of-10 shooting while Dillinger was held down to 6 on 2-of-11 from the floor.
