LUCENA CITY – After desperately searching for a win that eluded them in four games, coach Caloy Garcia and the rest of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters finally enjoyed the sweet taste of victory on Saturday night.
“Feels great, makakatulog na rin siguro kami. With all the frustrations that’s been happening to us this conference. This is a very good win that brings some cheers to us,” the ecstatic mentor told FOX Sports Philippines after his team’s 104-97 drubbing of Barangay Ginebra inside the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.
Boasting a 7-1 win-loss slate entering the contest, Ginebra came in as heavy favorites to dispatch the underperforming Rain or Shine squad. The team, however, had other plans in mind.
“I just told my team that facing Ginebra can bring out the best in you or the worst in you. Today, it brought out the best in us. Its really hard to play Ginebra, especially out of town because you know the crowd is going to be against you. We just stuck together and played together to win this game,” he shared.
Up by seven points after two quarters, the Elasto Painters kicked to an even higher gear in the third quarter to establish a comfortable margin against the crowd favorites.
“We were doing well in defense and we were just hoping that Ginebra will miss some shots. I think the key was they were missing shots and we were making big shots,” Garcia said. “I’m not sure how big of a lead we’ve built. Like 18 or 20 points. At least we were able to build that big of a lead, but we still have to work on keeping those leads.”
With six games still remaining for RoS in the elimination round, Garcia hopes that last night’s victory will finally give his team enough momentum to make a run for the playoffs.
Still, he understands that all of his guys must fight tooth-and-nail in order surpass the tough challenge ahead.
“Our schedule is practically every playing day which is going to be tough for us, but we have to rely on other players. I told them we can’t use the same players every game because it’s going to be tiring. Especially for Terrence (Watson), I told him he’s going to battle lots of good imports so we just have to find ways to win.”
Rain or Shine will have a chance to sweep their next three games, as they face fellow struggling teams Northport Batang Pier, Columbian Dyip, and the Meralco Bolts.
