BOCAUE — June Mar Fajardo rewrote history books once more after claiming his fifth straight Most Valuable Player award during the PBA Leo Awards held Sunday at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
Fajardo’s fifth plum puts him ahead of Ramon Fernandez and Alvin Patrimonio, who each had four throughout their illustrious careers, for most in league history.
‘The Kraken’ accumulated 2436 statistical points and edged out NorthPort guard Stanley Pringle, who had 2041 points, for the most prestigious individual award.
This is an unprecedented feat considering that Fajardo, who was a late-bloomer and only played competitive organized basketball fully when he was in college, only needed six years to snatch five MVPs.
He averaged 20.6 points, 12.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.2 blocks in the 43rd season.
Magnolia’s Paul Lee, Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar and San Miguel’s Marcio Lassiter joined Pringle and Fajardo in the First Mythical Team.
Scottie Thompson, Mark Barroca, Arwind Santos, JP Erram and Matthew Wright, meanwhile, made up the Second Mythical Team.
Thompson was also the recipient for the Most Improved Player award after accumulating 4217 points.
Phoenix big man Jason Perkins, on the other hand, was the runaway winner for the Rookie of the Year Award after amassing 2863 statistical points.
For the All-Defensive Team, Fajardo was joined by Rain or Shine’s Gabe Norwood, Magnolia’s Raffy Reavis and Rome dela Rosa, and teammate Chris Ross.
Earlier, Norwood claimed his third straight Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Award.
