Columbian Dyip kept their four-game win streak over Rain or Shine alive after escaping with an 85-82 win in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
James Yap missed a heave from the left arc in the dying seconds, which would have given the Elasto Painters five more minutes to avoid a second straight loss.
But the Dyip, who were led by Rashawn McCarthy’s 22 points and five rebounds, proved to be steadier in the clutch after failing to pull away in the first three quarters.
Rain or Shine stormed to a 26-15 first quarter lead thanks to a 10-point opening frame from James Yap, but Columbian managed to outscore their counterparts 27-14 to take a 42-40 lead entering halftime.
Columbian looked like they were about to pull away in the third after a nine-point quarter from McCarthy gave them three nine-point leads in separate occassions, but Rain or Shine continued to threaten late.
A Gabe Norwood trey with 2:06 left in the game cut the Dyip’s leaad to just one, 82-83, but the Elasto Painters failed to take advantage and missed from downtown on two straight trips.
Free throws from Reden Celda with two seconds left gave Columbian the needed cushion.
“After losing to Blackwater, we had to bounce back. Sabi ko nga sa kanila losing to Blackwater… that’s it. Dapat tama na ‘yun. Kasi we have three more games, so we need these. One game at a time. We’re just lucky na nanalo kami,” head coach Johnedel Cardel said after the game.
“Every quarter we had to fight, play defense, especially in the fourth quarter. Give ourselves a chance to win.”
Columbian is now 4-0 against Rain or Shine after a 0-9 record against them in three straight seasons before last year.
Mark Borboran paced the Elasto Painters with 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including a 5-for-9 mark from downtown.
