Beau Belga hits rebounding milestone, but frustration clouds shining moment

Toronto Raptors superstar Kawhi Leonard nails nine 3’s in a row!

Beau Belga wasn’t in any mood to celebrate a personal PBA record he set Wednesday against Columbian.

The 32-year-old center, who grabbed seven boards in Rain or Shine’s loss vs. the Dyip, became the latest big man to enter the league’s 2000-rebound club.

But instead of basking in the moment, Belga explained how he doesn’t really care about individual accolades.

“I’m not interested in statistics. Ako talaga I just wanna win, and I wanna win championships. Kung may na-achieve man ako, I’m feeling thankful na naa-appreciate ng liga, nare-recognize ‘yung effort ko. But it will boil down kung sino mananalo sa championships. ‘Yun naman ang purpose ng liga na ‘to eh. Whoever wins the championships mostly mare-recognize,” Belga explained.

Rain or Shine slid to their second straight loss tonight after a hot start in the Philippine Cup. They’re still in contention for a playoff spot, but the team is understably frustrated since the loss might have put a dent on their hopes of snagging a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.

Moreover, this is the Elasto Painters’ fourth straight defeat against Columbian dating back to last year.

“Dun ako naf-frustrate. Para kaming ‘di nadala ‘di ba? ‘Di ko na alam kung ano gagawin. It’s frustrating. Kung nakita mo dugout scene kanina lahat galit,” Belga bared.

“Good thing nasa ilalim sila so ‘di pa namin pproblemahin talaga. Our problem is medyo tagilid kami in contention sa top two spots. Sabi ko nga we have an easier job dahil na-survive natin ‘yung malalakas. The last remaining three is medyo nasa kamay natin ‘di ba? Kaya lang, dun pa kami sa dulo nagkaroon ng ganitong klaseng problema,” he added.

Belga and the Elasto Painters only have one more team on their eliminations calendar against the Bolts next week. They’ve got nine days off before that matchup and a longer break ahead of them before the playoffs after that, and that time, for him, should be enough for them to get back to their prime form earlier in this conference.

“Magandang game plan coaching staff namin against Meralco, and we need to win that game. ‘Yun na lang hiniling ko sa kanila. The good thing nakapunto tayo ng pitong panalo kaya ‘yung paa natin medyo nasa playoffs na,” he said.

“Back to the drawing board. Balikan namin ‘yung mga laro kung saan kami naging successful. Forget about this loss, wala nang magagawa eh. Kahit naman pasok na kami sa playoffs syempre you wanna go in galing sa panalo.”
