Ginebra successfully stifled a gutsy Magnolia side in its first Manila Clasico showdown of the year by scoring a 97-93 win in overtime in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Gin Kings had to rely on a career-night from Scottie Thompson, who finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds, to turn back a Hotshots side that went down swinging.
Trailing by six, 79-85, with under a minute to go, Magnolia was able to force overtime thanks to back-to-back triples from Jio Jalalon.
But in the extra period, Magnolia failed to sustain momentum as a five-point swing—a triple from Thompson and a fastbreak dunk by Japeth Aguilar—gave Ginebra a comfortable 96-90 lead with under two minutes left.
Ginebra improved to 5-3 in the standings.
Magnolia, on the other hand, fell to eighth place with a 3-5 win-loss card.
