FIBA: Batang Gilas bigs among most efficient scorers in U17 World Cup

Batang Gilas may have failed to make a meaningful run in the FIBA U17 World Cup in Argentina, but two of the team’s standouts bagged notable wins elsewhere.

In a list released on Twitter by Synergy Basketball, a company that produces basketball analytics for scouting and development purposes, Kai Sotto and Raven Cortez ranked among the tournament’s best players on offense.

Sotto, who averaged 16.4 points on 47.2 percent shooting, was grouped among the most efficient high-volume scorers per game by norming 0.94 points per possession on 17.6 possessions per game.

The 7-foot-1 center was also 13th in field goal percentage after shooting 47.2 percent in seven games.

De La Salle Zobel’s Raven Cortez, meanwhile, didn’t get a lot of touches (6.4 possessions per game) but was nonetheless listed among the most efficient in a list of qualified low-usage guys by scoring 1.09 points per possession.

Cortez had the hottest hand for Batang Gilas by shooting 62.5 percent from the field. The 6-foot-7 forward also had an 11.1 player efficiency rating (second-best behind Sotto) and grabbed 4.7 rebounds in 19.5 minutes per game (fourth).

Fil-Am Jalen Green, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, was the most efficient high-volume player by tallying an impressive 1.15 points per possession on 13.7 possessions per game.

He finished with 15.7 points in seven games for the gold medalists.
