“The UPMBT supports their move as it gives way to the greater calling of playing for country. UP is after all, all about serving the country and giving its best in service of the people. The GDL brothers represent the best of the UP Basketball Program and we support their desire to serve our country by playing for the national team,” said in the statement.

“Still, they remain a part of the UP Men’s Basketball Team. We are beyond grateful for their contributions to the uprising of the program in recent years. Best wishes to Juan and Javi and our Gilas team in their quest for Gilas Gold,” they added.

Both were vital cogs to the Fighting Maroons’ campaign in Season 82 to which they went to as far as the Finals against the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Juan and Javi have been called up by the Gilas program recently in their 24-man pool. They are expected to play alongside the likes of fellow amateurs standouts in Kobe Paras, Thirdy Ravena, Isaac Go, Mike Nieto, Matt Nieto, Rey Suerte, Allyn Bulanadi, plus some PBA veterans.

The two are also coming off from Mighty Sports Philippines’ championship run in the 2020 Dubai Invitational Basketball Tournament.
