From Taft to Diliman: Rivero joins stacked UP Fighting Maroons

Ricci Rivero is heading up north to the Maroon side.

In a statement released to media, he said that he’ll be suiting up for an already stacked UP squad bannered by import Bright Akhuetie, captain Paul Desiderio, and brothers Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano.

The 20-year-old guard also posted a tweet confirming his decision.

“They told me that UP Maroons fans were crazy about the team and were there for them, win or lose. I saw that, too, when I played against them; sobrang ingay ng mga taga UP; di mo alam kung lamang sila ng sampu o lamang ang kalaban nila ng sampu,” Rivero’s said in the statement.

In his last year with the Green Archers, he averaged 13.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.6 steals and bagged the Most Improved Player Award.

He also was included in Season 79’s Mythical Five and was instrumental in DLSU’s to the Finals, where they lost to Ateneo.

Rivero, however, won’t be seeing action for the Maroons anytime soon, as he’ll have to sit out one season for a redshirt year due to UAAP’s eligibility years.

He’ll take the court for the first time in Season 82.

2019 won’t be the first time that he’d be playing with UP’s core. Rivero was alongside Akhuetie, Desiderio and former UAAP Junios MVP Will Gozum in an unfruitful campaign with the Gilas cadets.
