Preview: Selangor FA vs Ceres

AFC Cup 2019: Persija Jakarta 6-1 Shan United – Bruno Matos (90+2′)

Selangor FA host Ceres La Salle FC on Tuesday at Selayang Stadium in a pivotal clash in Group E of the AFC Cup.

Ceres are currently at the summit of the group with eight points from four games. Tampines Rovers are second with seven points. On the same tally are Selangor who occupy third while Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd are at the foot of the group without a point to their name.

Tuesday’s encounter is of serious significance to both teams. A win for Ceres will guarantee them a spot in the next round of the competition while three-points for Selangor will see them, at worst, finish the round in second place in the group.

The last time these two teams met was in the opening fixture of the group stages way back in February. At the conclusion of a closely-contested game, the score was 2-2 and the teams shared the points.

Both sides have struggled of late on the domestic front.

Ceres completed a grueling three-game stretch in early April as they faced Kaya in a friendly, Tampines in the AFC Cup, and Global FC in the final of the UFL Cup. The tight schedule saw The Busmen beating Kaya and Tampines but bowing out in the final of the UFL Cup against a well-rested Global outfit.

Adrián Gallardo has been in fine form for Ceres in Asia, netting five goals in four matches. He will shoulder a lot of the responsibility on Wednesday.

Of Selangor’s last five league games, they have only been able to record one victory, which was against Penang on the 20th of April. Consequently, they lie fourth in the Malaysian Super League with just 15 points from nine games.

They will look to Mauro Olivi to find the back of the net for them. He has three goals so far in this year’s edition of the AFC Cup.
