Missed penalty brings down grandstand light

A thumping free-kick from Andros Townsend was enough for Newcastle United to claim a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park on Saturday, lifting them out of the relegation zone.

The first half was a closely contested affair that ended in stalemate, but the match sprang to life in the 58th minute when Townsend found the top-left corner with a stunning free-kick from 20 yards out.

Palace had a glorious opportunity to draw level in the 70th minute when Moussa Sissoko handled the ball in the area, but the chance went abegging as Magpies keeper Karl Darlow kept out Yohan Cabaye’s spot-kick.

The opening stages were denied a goal in part due to good defending at either end of the pitch, with Scott Dann stealing the ball off the toe of Papiss Cissé before he could let fly, and Jamaal Lascelles doing the same just as Connor Wickham was about to pull the trigger.

Andros Townsend fluffed a chance after 15 minutes with a poor touch after Georginio Wijnaldum had slipped it through to him,

Yohan Cabaye came close with a fierce shot from a tight angle after latching onto Jason Puncheon’s ball down the right flank, but Karl Darlow punched it away at the near post.

With the first period coming to a close, Magpies defender Chancel Mbemba decided to have a go from long-range and forced Wayne Hennessey into a decent diving save.

A few minutes later Yannick Bolasie produced an even better stop from Darlow at the other end with a sweetly-struck volley in the 43rd minute, while Jack Colback curled an effort narrowly wide on the stroke of halftime.

Newcastle took the lead after the restart through Andros Townsend in the 58th minute. The former Spurs winger won a free-kick off Dann and curled the resulting effort into the top corner.

The Eagles were given a great chance to equalise in the 70th minute when Cabaye’s corner struck Moussa Sissoko on the arm and Palace were given a penalty, but the Frenchman was poor from the spot, allowing Darlow to make the save.
