New Schalke boss Weinzierl optimistic

‘If it was my team, it would be a ‘no’ from me.’ Steve McManaman doesn’t back Neymar’s mooted La Liga return…

New FC Schalke 04 head coach Markus Weinzierl says the team is beginning to take shape as the first week of pre-season comes to an end.

After being snapped up by Schalke due to his excellent work at FC Augsburg, the 41-year-old understands the expectations of the two clubs differ and insists that he will strive to take Schalke back to the upper echelons of European football by creating a positive team spirit.

The Bundesliga outfit is currently in China for the Leagues World Tour, and Weinzierl admits it’s all new to him being in the country for the first time.

“The trip alone helped our team building,” he told the club’s official website. “We had a lot of opportunities to get to know each other better.

“It was a very positive experience. Our surroundings were very good and I can’t identify any negative aspects. It was a good start.

“In our next 10 days we will play four games and we want to score a lot of goals in those. Then we will have another phase where we will again train intensively.

“Everything’s positive – the lads are nice and the atmosphere is good.”
