Genesio expresses Lacazette doubts

Lyon manager Bruno Genesio is unsure whether Alexandre Lacazette will still be at the club when the transfer window closes as Arsenal continue to be linked with his signature.

The 25-year-old striker was unfortunate to be left out of the France squad for Euro 2016 on home soil after scoring 21 goals in Ligue 1 last season for Les Gones.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a known admirer of Lacazette and has already tried to sign his compatriot, but saw a €35 million bid knocked back by the French club last month.

OL owner Jean Michel-Aulas is expected to hand the France international improved terms  at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in a bid to fend off persistent interest from the north Londoners.

But Genesio concedes a big-money offer could still succeed in prying Lacazette away, although he is hoping to keep hold of the hot-shot marksman.

“When you say ‘could leave’, of course, every player who is sought after could leave, by definition, since, as my president has said, there are sometimes offers that cannot be refused,” Genesio told RTL about the exit rumours.

“But in any case, my desire and my responsibility as manager is to ask that the best players in my squad stay at Lyon. That’s the case with Alex – he’s the leader of my attack. He’s a player that’s very, very important for the team, as are others incidentally.

“For the moment, I’ve been assured by my president that we will keep these players, but in football and during the transfer window you always have to remain prudent with this type of statement because you never know what might happen between now and August 31.”
