Rumour ratings: Benteke to Palace; Schweinsteiger to stay in England?

Zidane defends Real’s performance following 3-1 defeat to Bayern

On a busy day in the transfer market that saw the transfers of John Stones to Manchester City and Paul Pogba to Manchester United confirmed, there was talk of Crystal Palace closing in on the signature of Christian Benteke and Ashley Williams discussing terms with Everton.

Premier League spending is now approaching £800 million and a one billion pound total is likely to be exceeded for the first time in history.

Sky Sports sources revealed that Crystal Palace are in talks with Liverpool over signing Benteke. The story goes that Liverpool will not accept anything less than the 32.5 million Pounds they paid Aston Villa last summer.

Rumour rating: 7/10. Where there is smoke there is fire. Unless something drastic happens, the 26-time Belgian international seems certain to be playing for The Eagles shortly. The more pressing question is whether Palace will be able to get the deal over the line before the start of the season.

Schweinsteiger set to stay in England?

Even before Paul Pogba’s arrival in Manchester it appeared that Bastian Schweinsteiger’s days at Old Trafford were numbered, and that seems even more the case now.

While Schweinsteiger has been linked with a return to Germany, according to Press Association Sport he may well be staying in England, with a number of Premier League clubs said to be interested in his services. However, clubs were named in the report.

Rumour rating: 3/10. After a disappointing spell at United and with his body no longer holding up like it used to, a move to one of Turkey’s big clubs seems more likely than a stay in the Premier League.

Koulibaly still linked with Chelsea (London Evening Standard)

Despite an earlier Chelsea-bid for Kalidou Koulibaly being rejected by Napoli, The London Evening Standard have reported that the Blues are still pursuing the talented Senegalese defender.

Chelsea are supposedly looking to offer the Senegalese international £60,000-a-week over five years, with a £37 million bid tabled for the 25-year-old so far.

Rumour rating: 6/10. Antonio Conte is extremely familiar with the Italian Serie A and is well aware of what Koulibaly is all about. Furthermore, his footballing philosophy is based around a rock solid defence. Conte seems serious about adding reinforcements to Chelsea’s back four and it’s highly probable that he will get his man… at whatever cost. However, with Stones signed will another defender still be added?

Williams to Everton (BBC)

The BBC confirmed that Swansea City have accepted a bid for captain Ashley Williams from Premier League rivals Everton.

Ex-Wales defender Danny Gabbidon, who is also a consultant for Williams’ agent, tweeted: “Believe fee has been agreed. Medical booked and player en route.”

Rumour rating: 9/10. With a number of other sources covering the story, this one seems concrete. It is also unlikely that Everton would have sold Stones if they did not have a solid replacement lined-up.
