Atleti held by dogged Alaves

Malaysia Super League: Leandro Velasquez GOLAZO for JDT

Newly-promoted Alaves can consider themselves incredibly fortunate to be walking away from Estadio Vicente Calderón with a point after their fixture against Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Sunday night.

The underdogs put in a Herculean defensive display and were aided by some woefully inaccurate shooting from the hosts to grab an unexpected 1-1 draw.

They registered just two shots on goal, one was on target, while Atletico had 27 – of which only six were on target.

On top of that, it seemed they almost never had the ball, with the home side registering 62% of the possession across the 90 minutes.

The match seemed like it was heading for a 0-0 draw before a flurry of action in stoppage time at the end of the second half.

The home side thought they'd stolen the points when Victor Laguardia gave away a needless penalty for holding in the box. Kevin Gameiro dully stepped up and slotted home with confidence.

However, not to be outdone, the visitors then marched down the other end of the pitch from the kickoff and scored through Manu Garcia with their first shot on target five minutes into injury time to grab an unexpected and quite fortunate point.

The result sees Atletico already fall behind title rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid, who both won their opening games of the season.

Real Madrid showed their class to brush aside Real Sociedad in a thoroughly one-sided affair at Estadio Anoeta, which they won 3-0.

Gareth Bale opened the scoring in just the second minute and ended the game as he began it by completing his brace in the fourth minute of extra time, with Marco Asensio providing the other goal in the 40th minute.

In the day's early match, Sporting Gijon were able to grab a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao at Estadio El Molinón, despite Ismael Lopez Blanco missing a penalty in the 63rd minute.

After a thoroughly uneventful first half, the hosts burst out of the blocks in the second half and grabbed a quick-fire double through Duje Cop and Victor Rodriguez in the 50th and 53rd minutes respectively.

Borja Viguera pulled one back in the 86th minute to give Gijon a late scare, but they were able to hang on for a good win.

Sunday's La Liga results:

  • Sporting Gijon 2-1 Athletic Bilbao
  • Real Sociedad 0-3 Real Madrid
  • Atletico Madrid 1-1 Alaves
