Fazrul aiming to return for Asian Cup qualifiers

Tampines Rovers striker Fazrul Nawaz is hoping to have recovered from a knee injury in time to represent Singapore in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in March.

Fazrul is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after injuring the ACL in his left knee while playing for Tampines in their S.League match against Hougang United on August 17. While a return date has not yet been set, the forward is expected to be out for at least six months as he awaits surgery on the injury.

The 31-year-old admitted he was bitterly disappointed to be sidelined for a significant period, but is confident that he will overcome the setback as he suffered a similar injury in his right knee back in 2008.

“Once I heard that sound I knew it was a bad injury,” Fazrul told ESPN FC. “But I am strong enough. I’ve gone through it before, and will go through it again.

“I am a bit disappointed but I know that I will come back even stronger.”

While Fazrul is eager to make his return, he insisted that he will not rush back until he is certain that he is fully fit.

“My target now is not to rush, but I am aiming for the new season [in 2017] and hopefully I will be back for [Singapore’s] Asian Cup qualifiers,” he said.
