What a start to the season! I’ve lost count how many times I patted myself on the back after putting Robert Lewandowski in my team at the last minute – and making him captain. I very much hope that you named the Poland international in your starting XI, too.
While FC Bayern München’s stunning victory over SV Werder Bremen was not entirely unexpected, I was pleasantly surprised by a number of players on Matchday 1. “Who?” I hear you cry! Don’t worry, I shall reveal all…
1) Mijat Gacinovic (Eintracht Frankfurt, midfielder, 5.1m)
In my opinion, Mijat Gacinovic was the star of Matchday 1. The Serbian not only played a pivotal role in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 1-0 victory over FC Schalke 04, but he also seems made for Official Fantasy Bundesliga. The attacker won 17 of his 27 attempted challenges – more than any other player on the opening weekend. If he keeps that up, he will guarantee you points regardless of his team’s result and whether or not he finds the net. At that price, you should snap him up right away!
2) Benno Schmitz (RB Leipzig, defender, 2.1m)
Benno Schmitz represented the best-value-for-money performer of Matchday 1. No other player garnered more points per million. A last-minute replacement for the injured Lukas Klostermann, he did a fantastic all-round job: Winning ten of his attempted challenges and providing the assist for Leipzig’s second equaliser of the afternoon, more than compensated for the two goals RB conceded. Schmitz racked up nine points in total, but you have to wonder how much action he will see, if Klostermann is fit again in time for Matchday 2. The 21-year-old has, however, laid down an impressive marker.
3) Genki Haraguchi (Hertha Berlin, midfielder, 9.2m)
Putting the disappointment of missing out on UEFA Europa League group stage football behind them, Hertha Berlin kicked off their season with a last-gasp win over SC Freiburg. Genki Haraguchi did not score or grab an assist, but his performance was key and earned Official Fantasy Bundesliga coaches an impressive 11 points. The Japan international, who contested 28 head-to-heads, always wears his heart on his sleeve and represents fantastic value at just 9.2 million.
4) Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (FC Schalke 04, striker, 13.1m)
At first glance, you might be surprised to see Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting make my top five. The Schalke forward is a permanent fixture in the Bundesliga, but he does not come cheap at 13.1 million and he was on the end of a 1-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on the opening day. However, he still got off to a fine start in an Official Fantasy Bundesliga sense. Winning 15 of his attempted challenges and firing off three shots on goal, the Cameroonian accumulated nine points. Imagine how many he’ll get when Schalke click into gear! Keep a close eye on this one!
5) Konstantinos Stafylidis (FC Augsburg, defender, 6m)
Konstantinos Stafylidis was on the losing side on Matchday 1 as FC Augsburg succumbed to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of VfL Wolfsburg. The Greek left-back nevertheless came out of the contest with seven Official Fantasy Bundesliga points to his name. He won 11 of 13 attempted challenges and should provide a regular source of points, if he can stay as clean and consistent in the tackle over the course of the campaign – regardless of how Augsburg fare.
So, that’s my take on Matchday 1. I’ll be using the international break to once again pore over all nine games from the opening weekend, before I bring you my recommendations ahead of Matchday 2. Remember: keep your eyes on the transfer market!
