Groningen earned their first league victory of the season as they demolished Utrecht 5-1 away from home on Friday evening.
Oussama Idrissi got the ball rolling for the visitors in the 13th minute when he fired past Utrecht keeper Robbin Ruiter after receiving a through ball from Ramon Leeuwin.
Idrissi was on the scoresheet again just before half-time, this time giving Ruiter no chance with a fabulous strike into the top corner.
The hosts briefly had hope of a comeback when striker Richairo Zivkovic pulled one back on the hour mark, expertly shrugging off his marker before finding the back of the net.
The hosts' flame was quickly extinguished though as, just five minutes later, Danny Hoesen rounded Ruiter and tapped into an empty net to restore Groningen's two-goal cushion.
Substitute Tom van Weert scored the third while Hoesen completed his brace late on as Groningen ran out comfortable winners.
The win moves them up to 13th on the league table while Utrecht, who are still searching for their first victory of the campaign, sit second from bottom.
