Striker Anthony Modeste hailed a “superb night for the team and the fans” after inspiring 1. FC Köln to a 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Friday night.
The Frenchman scored either side of Leonardo Bittencourt’s 31st-minute goal as Köln maintained their unbeaten start to the 2016/17 season.
Added to that, the result propelled the Billy Goats to the top of the table, ahead of the weekend’s Bundesliga fixtures.
“It was a superb night for the team and the fans,” Modeste was quoted as saying by the official Bundesliga website.
“We’ll have to see [about qualifying for Europe]. We’re taking each game as it comes.”
FC Köln head coach Peter Stöger, meanwhile, praised the fighting spirit of Freiburg, while also expressing the belief that his side would not be at the summit of the Bundesliga by the close of play on Saturday.
“We’re happy about the win. We put in a lot and played to a good standard, but Freiburg didn’t give up and they carved out chances. Come Saturday at 17:30 we won’t be top any longer,” Stöger said.
