After suffering a disappointing start to the Bundesliga season, FC Schalke 04 defender Naldo has called on the squad to work together to recover their form.
The Miners have started the new season with three consecutive losses in the league to find themselves second from bottom, just ahead of SV Werder Bremen.
While they did pick up a 1-0 win over Ligue 1 club Nice in the Europa League in midweek, they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hertha Berlin on Sunday to continue their victory-less start domestically.
What was most disappointing for Naldo is that he felt they had been the better side through much of the game before they conceded.
“Overall, neither side made many chances, and both teams stayed very compact,” he told the club’s official website after the game. “Until the opener, we had been the better side, which made the goal we conceded to Mitchell Weiser to make it 1-0 even more annoying.
“We lost possession too close to our own goal, and that is always a difficult situation to deal with as a central defender.
“Despite that, we win together, we lose together. At the moment we are too cautious in the final third and with our final ball.
“Zero points from three games is not [us]. The fans gave us fantastic support in Berlin, and I am sorry that we could not repay that with a win.”
Fellow defender Benedikt Howedes agreed that they had not been at their best against Hertha, but put it down to a bad day at the office, and remains confident they are good enough to recover from their current slump.
“We have had a bad day and did not produce what we are capable of producing,” he added. “For the goals we conceded and a few challenges we found ourselves lacking, with heavy consequences.
“Still, I see us as being on the right path, even though we are all aware that we currently have no points. Now we are looking ahead to playing 1. FC Köln.”
