Leipzig impress, Schalke’s struggles continue

Sunday’s two Bundesliga matches saw very differing fortunes for newly-promoted RB Leipzig and established veterans FC Schalke 04.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim inflicted more misery on rock-bottom Schalke with a 2-1 victory at the Wirsol Rhein-Neckar-Arena to main their unbeaten start to the season.

The visitors got off to a flying start when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting gave them a fourth-minute lead, but they were pegged back by Andrej Kramaric’s equaliser 13 minutes later.

Lukas Rupp then completed the comeback win for Julian Nagelsmann’s side four minutes before half-time as they finally recorded a three-point haul, having drawn their opening four league games.

Die Konigsblauen, meanwhile, remain rooted to the foot of the table after suffering a fifth straight loss.

Elsewhere, Leipzig continued their impressive debut in the top flight as they held 1. FC Köln to a 1-1 draw at the Rhein Energie Stadion.

Oliver Burke’s fifth-minute opener threatened to give Die Bullen their third league win since being promoted, but Yuya Osako responded for Peter Stoger’s men before the interval to earn a share of the spoils.

Leipzig occupy seventh spot, having yet to taste defeat this term, while the third-placed Billy Goats are also unbeaten thus far and trail leaders FC Bayern München by four points.
