Mohannad Abdulraheem would score all the goals as Thailand slumped to their fourth straight defeat in the qualification race, leaving them bottom of Group B.
“First of all, congratulations to Iraq on getting the win today,” said the Thai native after the match.
“They played really strong and they played well. We had hoped to take the scores level into half-time but we conceded two early goals.
“Our players did really well, they fought their best against Iraq during the 90 minutes. Unfortunately we lost three key players to injuries and this proved too much to overcome.”
Meanwhile, Iraqi coach Radhi Shenaishil heaped praise on his charges and revealed the importance of the win, which is the first in their qualifying campaign, giving them a slender chance of qualifying for Russia 2018.
“Today was a crucial match, a very important match…the win is very important for the Iraqi team,” said Shenaishil.
“If we look at the three matches we have had so far, all the teams were very close to each other. I know Thailand is a very good team but they were very open in the first half. And the injuries the Thai players sustained gave us the upper hand in the match.
“Now this match becomes part of the past, we have to look to upcoming matches against other teams and we hope to continue in this way.”
