European World Cup qualifying round-up

Tuesday's European World Cup qualifiers saw Germany and Poland pick up wins, while England and the Czech Republic were held to disappointing draws.

Germany maintained their perfect start to the qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland at the HDI-Arena in Hanover.

Julian Draxler (13') gave the hosts an early lead and Sami Khedira struck four minutes later to secure a third straight victory in Group C for Joachim Low's side.

Elsewhere, Poland left it very late to clinch a 2-1 success against Armenia in their Group E clash at the National Stadium in Warsaw.

The visitors suffered a double blow when Gael Andonian was sent off for a second bookable offence on the half-hour mark before Hrayr Mkoyan (48') put past his own keeper early in the second half to hand the Eagles the advantage.

They responded swiftly to the own-goal by restoring parity just two minutes later through Marcos Pineiro Pizzelli, but the hosts dashed their hopes deep into stoppage time with a winner from Robert Lewandowski.

Meanwhile, Scotland's qualification bid for Russia 2018 took a knock after they were beaten 3-0 by Slovakia at the Stadion Antona Malatinskeho in Trnava.

A double from Robert Mak (18', 56') either side of half-time put the hosts in command before Adam Nemec (68') sealed a first win in the qualifiers for Jan Kozak's men.

England dropped their first points of the qualifying campaign after they were held to a goalless draw by Slovenia at the Stozice Stadium in Ljubljana.

The Three Lions had to rely on Joe Hart to ensure they went back home with a point as the keeper pulled off a handful of saves to keep the hosts at bay.

Czech Republic are still searching for their first victory in the qualifiers after they played out to a frustrating 0-0 draw with Azerbaijan at the Municipal Stadium in Ostrava.

The hosts had 17 attempts at goal in their Group C encounter, but only hit the target five times as they were held by Robert Prosinecki's team.
