Just like the previous meeting on Sunday, United bossed proceedings but the roles were reversed this time around as the hosts took an early lead.

Wayne Rooney’s reverse pass found Henrikh Mkhitaryan, whose backheel sent Ibrahimovic through on goal and he beat Adrian with ease from close range in the second minute.

Ibrahimovic had the chance to double the Red Devils’ advantage five minutes later when he was played in by Rooney, but the Swedish striker was denied by Adrian twice in quick succession.

The Hammers keeper pulled off another good save to keep out Rooney’s free-kick from the edge of the area on the left in the 16th minute, before Martial blazed over from 20 yards out moments later as United broke from a corner at their end.

Martial should have done better when he was picked out on the left by Valencia’s squared pass inside the area on the half-hour mark, but the French forward hit a rather tame effort straight at Adrian.

It proved a costly miss as the visitors drew level five minutes later as Dimitri Payet cut inside from the left flank before firing off a shot that was parried back into the danger area by David De Gea and Fletcher was on hand to score on the rebound from close range.

The second half had barely got underway when Martial restored United’s lead, lashing the ball into the top left corner from Mkhitaryan’s cut-back after the midfielder had been played in on the right by Valencia’s backheel.

Martial was denied his second and United’s third on 56 minutes when Adrian stopped his effort from 12 yards out after he was played in by Rooney.

But the France international did score again six minutes later as he was picked out at the far post by Valencia, who got behind the defence with a clever pass from Ibrahimovic.

A quick break by United on 77 minutes saw Mkhitaryan, Ibrahimovic and Rooney link up before the Red Devils skipper curled a shot wide of the right post from just outside the area on the left.

Simone Zaza failed to make clean contact at the near post from Manuel Lanzini’s corner in the 84th minute, before the home crowd went wild moments later when Bastian Schweinsteiger was brought on for his first appearance of the season.

Schweinsteiger almost capped off the evening with a goal as he combined with Rooney and Ibrahimovic to fizz a shot just wide of the right post from the edge of the area in the final minute, while Sofiane Feghouli failed to hit the target on two occasions in stoppage time.

Schweinsteiger did get in on the action at the death as he played in Ander Herrera on the left, and the Spaniard beat his marker before crossing for Ibrahimovic to tap home from a few yards out.
