The Coach: Three favourable fixtures on Matchday 13

It has been three weeks since I last outscored Flo ‘The Scout’ on a single weekend, but it’s time to get back to closing the gap on the league leader and, don’t worry, I will be selling those binoculars on like a bad Secret Santa gift – so thanks for the extra Christmas cash Flo!

Matchday 13 is packed to the brim with thrilling fixtures with so much at stake that it is hard to pin-point exactly where the standout Official Fantasy Bundesliga performances will come from. So, as ever, I have picked three matches that will hopefully provide a good source of points.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen vs SC Freiburg

Suffering back-to back defeats is something a club with the aspirations of Bayer 04 Leverkusen should be aiming to avoid, but it has now happened to Roger Schmidt’s side twice this season. Already eight points adrift of the top four, die Werkself need to get a win under their belt. On paper at least, their saving grace could be facing a Freiburg side that has won just once on the road, conceding an average of almost three goals a game in the process.

Player recommendations

Julian Brandt (MF, 79pts, 14.75M): Brandt has been in sensational form in recent weeks chipping with two goals and three assists in his last three appearances.

Chicharito (FW, 64pts, 15.55M): Hasn’t scored since Matchday 6, but has a habit of scoring in batches and will be relishing his chances against the league’s third-leakiest backline.

SV Werder Bremen vs FC Ingolstadt 04

Serge Gnabry

I’m throwing the form book out of the window in this relegation six-pointer. Ingolstadt have collected four points from a possible six since Maik Walpurgis took over as head coach, while Bremen are winless in five with last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Hamburg the only time they’ve picked up points in that timeframe. However, instinct tells me that Werder, whose only two wins this season have both come on home soil, will be in line for another positive result on Matchday 13.

Player recommendations

Serge Gnabry (FW, 72pts, 10.4M): Gnabry has scored seven points or more in four of his last five appearances, but hasn’t cracked double digits. I’m backing him to do that this weekend.

Anthony Jung (DF, 27pts, 1.4M): A risky low-budget option, but Jung has caught my eye since winning favour under Walpurgis and picking up 21 points in his last two games.

SV Darmstadt 98 vs Hamburger SV

Darmstadt celebrate - FOR FOX ONLY

Darmstadt have suffered four straight defeats since their 3-1 win against Wolfsburg on Matchday 8 and recent performances suggest they may be ripe for the picking. Conversely, Hamburg have improved over the last few games and were unlucky not to take three points from the Nordderby against Bremen. This weekend presents a perfect opportunity to pick up pivotal points against fellow relegation candidates. I wouldn’t back HSV against many opponents, but Darmstadt are one of them.

Player recommendations

Douglas Santos (DF, 98pts, 10.7M): An attack-minded left back, who has won an average of 11 challenges a game and completed 90 minutes in every game since Matchday 3.

Michael Gregoritsch (MD, 41pts, 10.15M): A midfielder playing as a striker? Sign me up! Gregoritsch racked up 16 points last weekend and would have gotten more had he not lost his shoe!

I encourage you to look one or two fixtures further down the line before making any decisions regarding short-term changes. Put those three weekly transfer to good use and good luck this weekend!

Never tactics bored,

JT
