Elia warned Depay against United move

‘We need new signings to win the Champions League’, says Bayern’s Lewandowski

Feyenoord winger and Netherlands international Eljero Elia admits that he warned Memphis Depay against making a move to Premier League outfit Manchester United.

The 22-year-old joined the Old Trafford based-outfit in 2015, after his exploits for PSV Eindhoven, which saw him finish as the league's top goalscorer, however, Elia says he warned the winger against the move – citing it as too big of a step too soon.

"I thought Memphis first had to make a stop, first choose a club like Tottenham Hotspur," he told Helden Magazine.

"United are so big, the pressure is so high.

"He had to immediately make an impact at such a club, while everyone would watch him.

"Memphis accepted my opinion, but said, ‘I’ll try to give my all and I’m confident that I can succeed there," he concluded.

Depay has since fallen out of favour at the club and has made a mere eight appearances in all competitions for United this season.
