Thursday’s KNVB Beker round-up

Johor Darul Ta’zim vs Shandong Luneng – Reaction & Review

Record holders Ajax will not be adding a 19th title to their cabinet this year, but Sparta Rotterdam kept their challenge KNVB Beker going.

Peter Bosz's Ajax crashed out of the competition at the round of 16 after they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Cambuur at the Cambuurstadion on Thursday.

A first-half brace from Martijn Barto (20', 39') did the damage for the Eerste Divisie side, who were made to sweat when Pelle Clement (67') halved the deficit in the second half.

However, the Dutch giants failed to find the back of the net again as SCC progressed to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Sparta Rotterdam booked the passage in the next round with a 3-0 victory over Eredivisie rivals Heracles at the Polman Stadion.

De Kasteelheren, who last won the trophy in 1966 for their third title, had Zakaria El Azzouzi to thank for the win after his second-half hat-trick knocked out the Heraclieden.

The young Dutch striker broke the deadlock three minutes after the break and added a second on the hour mark before completing his three-goal haul on 87 minutes.

KNVB Beker results:
