JDT sign two Argentines for 2017 season

Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) have brought in Argentines Brian Ferreira and Gonzalo Cabrera to bolster their squad ahead of the upcoming Malaysian Super League season.

Ferreira, who is a 22-year-old striker, will replace Jorge Pereyra Diaz who will leave the club soon.

According to JDT coach Mario Gomez, Ferreira was interested in playing for the club since his compatriots Pablo Aimar and Luciano Figuera had also once plied their trade there.

“Brian is currently playing in Independiente and also used to play for the Argentina U21 national team,” Gomez said through JDT’s Facebook page. “He was inclined to sign for us because he was aware of the Argentina players Pablo Aimar and Luciano Figuera who played for the club.”

As for Cabrera, he will take the spot of midfielder Hariss Harun, who will be loaned out to a Japanese or Portuguese club for the 2017 season.

“Cabrera is a quality and experienced player that is important for the team,” Gomez said.

In addition to Ferreira and Cabrera, the Malaysian side have also secured the services of PKNS FC striker Gabriel Guerra, but he will be playing for JDT II.

“We will monitor his progress. If everything goes well he will have a good chance of representing our first team in the near future,” Gomez said.

They have also signed Nazmi Faiz, Ahmad Hazwan Bakri, Syahrul Azwari and Safawi Rasid.

JDT won the Malaysian Super League this year and triumphed in Charity Shield and Malaysian FA Cup. Having enjoyed a successful 2016, they will look to kick off the new year by qualifying for the AFC Champions League.

They will begin their campaign against Bangkok United on January 31 and should they win, they will then take on the fourth placed team from the J.League in the playoff round.
