Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed striker Wayne Rooney is doubtful for the Premier League clash with Middlesbrough on New Year’s Eve.

The United stalwart missed Monday's 3-1 victory over Sunderland after suffering a thigh strain in training and is now facing a race against time to be fit for Saturday's encounter at Old Trafford.

When asked if he expected Rooney to recover from his injury in time for their last fixture of 2016, Mourinho told the club's official website: "Honestly, I don't think so. I hope so.

"I would like to have him, he's always a player I would like to have but I have my doubts. Let's see the evolution [of the injury].

"It's a strange muscle, a big muscle surrounded by others and you can have an injury there but still be able to move well.

"He was not feeling very confident. It's not a big deal but, in four days, I have my doubts."

Rooney has made eight starts and a further six appearances from the bench in the Premier League this season, bagging one goal and providing five assists.
