AFC West Zone Wrap: Al Hilal win, draw in Tehran

I don’t feel sad, I feel happy – Torres on retirement

Al Hilal edged Esteghlal Khuzestan 2-1 while Persepolis and Lekhwiya SC battled to a goalless draw in first leg of the AFC Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday.

The opening half at the Al-Seeb Stadium in Oman was a cagey affair, but hosts Esteghlal finally broke through when Hassan Beit Saeid got the ball over the line with his knee after a great cross by teammate Peyman Shirzadi in the 42nd minute.

But a quick brace by visitors Al Hilal in the second half secured the win. Abdullah Al Zori would get the equaliser in the 52nd minute, driving the ball home from close range.

Five minutes later, midfielder Carlos Eduardo put the visitors in front with a great header from a Nicolas Milesi corner.

Meanwhile, hosts Persepolis will lament a late second half penalty miss by Mahdi Taremi in their clash against Qatar’s Lekhwiya SC.

The forward was taken down by Ali Afif in the box and stepped up to take the penalty, but Lekhwiya stopper Qasem Burhan was equal to the task, making a great save to his left.
