Taiwan secure thrilling comeback win over poor Lions

VfB Stuttgart or Union Berlin – Who will secure their spot in 2019/2020 Bundesliga season?

The Singapore Lions had their hearts broken by a resilient Taiwan side as they were denied the win that would have put them in prime position to qualify for the 2019 Asia Cup.

After the elation of earning a point away in Bahrain in March, and the late equaliser scored in their friendly against Myanmar, the Lions came back down to earth as they failed to capitalise on an early strike from central midfielder and vice-captain, Hariss Harun.

The 26-year-old had the National Stadium crowd in raptures when he opened the scoring for the home side in the sixth minute. But sadly for the hosts they were outplayed by a superior attacking force, despite managing a further four shots on target.

It was all Taiwan as soon as the visiting side regrouped after conceding the early goal and they only had to wait until the 30th minute for the equaliser – scored by right-back Xavier Chen.

Taiwan dominated possession for the remainder of the match and snatched a deserved winner 15 minutes after half-time – scored by 21-year old forward Chen Chao-an.

The match ended with the visitors dominating the key statistics, boasting 57 per cent possession and seven shots on target, compared to a respectable five from Singapore.

The result means that Taiwan have recovered from the 1-3 loss of their home fixture against Turkmenistan and now find themselves again in contention for qualification.
