Iran going to Russia 2018

Hazard, Brandt & Schulz: Dortmund’s Sensational Summer Coup

Iran booked their place in the 2018 World Cup finals after beating Uzbekistan 2-0 in a Group A qualifier at the Azadi Stadium on Monday.</p>

The hosts scored a goal in each half to secure the three points that ensured they would finish the qualifying campaign in the top-two of their group, having not conceded for 11 consecutive matches.

Carlos Queiroz’s side took control of proceedings early on and they broke the deadlock midway through the first half as reward for their good start.

Sardar Azmoun latched onto Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s through-ball in the 23rd minute and slotted home under visiting keeper Aleksandr Lobanov, who had advanced off his line.

Team Melli went into the break 1-0 up and they should have doubled their advantage five minutes after the restart when the referee pointed to the spot, but Masoud Shojaei fired his penalty over the crossbar.

However, the miss would not prove costly as the Iranians secured their passage to Russia with a second goal two minutes from time, Mehdi Taremi cutting inside the defence before curling the ball into the bottom corner of the net to send the Tehran crowd into raptures.
