UAE stumble against Thailand while Japan draw in Iraq

Hazard, Brandt & Schulz: Dortmund’s Sensational Summer Coup

United Arab Emirates are on the brink of failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after drawing 1-1 with Thailand, who are already out of contention.

Mongkol Tossakai put Thailand in front in the 69th minute at the Rajamangala National Stadium.

However, a stoppage-time equaliser made it 1-1 as Ali Ahmed Mabkhout hit the target.

The result sees the UAE six points behind Group B’s third-placed Australia with only two games left to play, while Thailand remain rock bottom.

Elsewhere, Iraq held Japan to a 1-1 draw at the Shahid Dastgerdi Stadium in Tehran. However, the point helped Japan maintain top spot in Group B while Iraq are already eliminated.

Yuya Osaka broke the deadlock for the visitors in the eighth minute.

Only for Mahdi Kamil to produce the equaliser in the 72nd minute to give the home support something to cheer about.

Japan are on 17 points at the top of the group, one point clear of Saudi Arabia and Australia.
