Bentaleb: No superstars at Schalke

Consadole Sapporo draw 0-0 against Gamba Osaka in J-League

FC Schalke 04 midfielder Nabil Bentaleb believes that a good work ethic is important to succeed at the Bundesliga club, as they lack a real superstar.

The 22-year-old initially joined the Royal Blues on loan from Tottenham last term but has now had his deal made permanent.

Bentaleb enjoyed a good season on a personal level, scoring seven goals, but his team could only manage a 10th-placed finish in the league after making a dreadful start to proceedings.

Nonetheless, the Algeria international is hopeful of better fortunes in 2017/18 and emphasised that consistency was the recipe for success.

"I want to continue performing as I have been up until now. I will try to increase my level. I always try to push myself even harder," Bentaleb told the official Bundesliga website.

"I try to improve my game and increase my strength. Most importantly I want to try to work on my weaknesses and to correct them. I have a strong fighting spirit that I bring to the team. I also bring some offensive and defensive strength.

"In our team there is no Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi so I just try to give my best every time I step onto the pitch in a Schalke shirt. I give 200% of myself. Sometimes I play well but maybe at others I won't but I try to be as consistent as possible and that's what makes a good player."
