NAC Breda head coach Stijn Vreven conceded his side were humbled in their 4-1 loss against Vitesse Arnhem upon their top-flight return.
The newly promoted Eredivisie side travelled to the GelreDome brimming with confidence after last season's exploits but were knocked back into reality by going down by three goals in the opening half hour.
Thomas Bruns, Bryan Linssen and Tim Matavs all netted for the hosts before Thierry Ambrose grabbed a 69th minute consolation. But Vitas found a three goals advantage again through Milot Rashica moments later.
"We wanted to make a game of it tonight and we did not manage to do that," he said after the game. "Everybody involved with NAC Breda now knows what we are in the Eredivisie.
"I am not going to be too negative. This is our first game away from home against a difficult opponent. We have learnt more tonight than the whole of last season.
"Tonight you saw the Eredivisie level at first hand and we have to learn to grow into it and get used to the tempo. We learnt a good lesson tonight."
