Advantage Everton in Europa League

Everton overcame Hadjuk Split 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie at Goodison Park on Thursday.

Michael Keane opened the scoring on 30 minutes ahead of a second from Idrissa Gueye on the stroke of half-time.

The Toffees were full of running from the off, with Davy Klaasen and Ademola Lookman looking lively, as Wayne Rooney headed an early Kevin Mirallas corner over the target.

Nikola Vlasic failed to test Jordan Pickford with his side's first shot, while Rooney volleyed wide ahead of the opening goal of the match.

Keane did well to rise the highest and head home from a Leighton Baines ball to the back post following a corner.

There was some real swagger to Everton's second goal as Gueye drilled his effort into the bottom corner after Rooney's brilliant through ball, following some determination from Klaasen to win the ball back.

Josip Radosevic was well wide with his ambitious effort at the start of the second half while Pickford had to be alert to deny Hamza Barry on the hour mark after Gueye had conceded possession in midfield.

Everton appeared content to sit on their lead somewhat as the tie wore on, allowing the visitors to attack, but Pickford was again alert, with a late save from substitute Ante Erceg as he tipped his effort around his goal.

Hysen Memolla was the last player to be denied by Pickford, as the hosts ultimately claimed a strong home win.
