Leverkusen assistant: Possession reduces scoring chances

Bayer Leverkusen assistant manager Lars Kornetka has explained the importance of utilising the transition phases in games as a way to score goals.

Kornetka, who is known for his video and data analysis, highlighted the fact that long spells of possession are detrimental to creating scoring opportunities. Making the most of transitions from defence to offense is also one of the best ways to create chances.

“Soccer is a game of transition,” he told BT Sport.

“There is a relationship between the time a team has the ball and goal rate – the longer they have it, the less chance they have of scoring.”

Kornetka has been doing football analytics for the past 10 years and has worked for the likes of Bayern Munich, Schalke 04, and Hoffenheim.

Leverkusen get their Bundesliga campaign underway against Die Roten on Friday at the Allianz Arena.
