The agent of Sassuolo's Francesco Acerbi claims the towering defender had agreed to join Internazionale but new head coach Luciano Spalletti had other ideas.
The former AC Milan centre-back has been a colossal figure at Neroverdi since recovering from testicular cancer upon joining the club in 2013.
He has been an ever-present figure with 135 appearances and even chipped in with 11 goals over the past three seasons. This form led to massive speculation with Inter and upon the expiry of his contract, the 29-year-old was keen on a switch to the San Siro.
However, his agent Augusto Carpeggiani has confirmed that after a change of heart from Inter bosses – his client committed to his current employees with a new long-term contract.
"This was the missed move of the summer," he told Calciomercato. "The negotiations were at an advanced stage, we'd had meetings and discussions, but when Spalletti and Sabatini arrived, things changed and they made other choices.
"Therefore, we decided to renew the contract with Sassuolo to 2022."
