France coach Didier Deschamps was not happy with what he saw in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bulgaria, but is confident they’ll wrap up World Cup qualification.
An early goal from Blaise Matuidi did the trick for Les Bleus in Sofia, keeping them one point clear of Sweden at the top of Group A, and needing just a win against Belarus to qualify for Russia 2018.
"It was a complicated match, with many faults," Deschamps told TF1. "We did not have a great second period, and they were more aggressive.
"There is only one game left, and that depends only on us. We'll have to win on Tuesday. I'm confident, as I was with this game."
While the outcome of the match between the Netherlands and Sweden could help the French, they can seal automatic qualification against Belarus at the Stade de France on Tuesday.
"There is a lot of satisfaction, but it is only one step," said captain Hugo Lloris. "There is a second match on Tuesday in front of our supporters. It will be important to recover well and concentrate on our next game."
