Global Cebu grinds out a tough 2-1 win against hosts Davao Aguilas

Consadole Sapporo draw 0-0 against Gamba Osaka in J-League

The positive result gained by the Cebu-based squad, courtesy of a 35th minute goal by Sekou Sylla that proved to be the winner, did not come easy as the hosts did everything, even getting a goal to cut the deficit, to be back into the game in a thrilling match held in Davao del Norte Sports Complex.

The fixture started with the home team immediately imposing themselves on the pitch as they dictated their style of play and brought the game to the visiting side.

However, at the approach of the 14th minute Global Cebu was able to get to their groove as well to match up against their hosts.

In the 16th minute Global Cebu FC was able to get ahead as their pressurizing offensive play got to the defense of Davao producing an own goal to make it 1-0.

The resulting goal somehow affected Davao’s approach to the game as they hurried on their offensive plays that gave the visitors chances on the counterattack.

Later in the 35th minute Global Cebu eventually was able to double their lead as Sekou Sylla scored with a well taken attempt.

It is to note after this goal though that instead of hanging their heads, Davao Aguilas knew that there is still time as they try to wake up and improve on holding the ball and their buildup plays as they enjoyed promising spells.

Not long after Davao pulled a goal back as a Davao ball managed to find Richard Talaroc inside the box who in turn found enough space and time to unleash an unstoppable shot on goal in the 41st minute to make it 2-1 heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, the level of football slightly dropped with a few of the players experiencing cramps.

In terms of the killer instinct shown by both teams, this aspect also dropped as chances were wasted. Although there were a few golden chances when both goalkeepers, Patrick Deyto for Global and Marko Trkulja for Davao made fine saves to maintain the scoreline.

Davao were to rue their notable amount of chances though as they were chasing for the equalizer, however the footballing gods weren’t smiling upon them this time as the game ended with a sorry loss for their team. Something that could be a dampener given the encouraging amount of home support they enjoyed.

The result puts Global in third place with thirteen points from four wins, one draw and two losses while Aguilas remain in sixth place from a pool of eight teams with four points from four wins and four losses as they are yet to register their first win in the league.

Global will next face Kaya FC Makati away in the University of Makati Stadium on July 2, 2017 at 4:00PM while Davao Aguilas will travel for a tough proposition against league leaders, JPV Marikina on the same time and date.
