Ceres-Negros down Shan United to march on at the top

by Gabriel Tan

Ceres-Negros moved three points clear at the top of AFC Cup Group F on Tuesday after claiming a 2-0 win over Shan United.

It initially looked as though the Philippine outfit would be frustrated at the Panaad Park and Stadium, as they spent much of the game struggling to break down their resilient opponents.

But, with 11 minutes remaining, the breakthrough finally arrived for Ceres when opposition left-back Hein Thiha Zaw’s comical attempt to clear Mike Ott’s cross saw him fire the ball off this own post, paving the way for Patrick Reichelt to poke home on the rebound.

Four minutes later, Ott – who was arguably the hosts’ best player on the night – embarked on another unstoppable charge down the left, leaving three defenders in his wake before cutting a pass back to leave Bienvenido Maranon with a simple tap-in.

The victory sees Ceres sitting comfortably at the top of Group F on seven points, three ahead of Home United, while Shan and Boeung Ket are tied in the lower half on three points each.
