Alfred Osei magic lifts Kaya Iloilo on top of Copa Alcantara Group B

Saudis, UAE, Bahrain to compete at Gulf Cup

An Alfred Osei special in the second half proved to be the only difference as Kaya Iloilo prevailed against JPV Marikina to go top of Group B in the Copa Paulino Alcantara this Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The match began with Keigo Moriyasu unleashing an early attempt in the first minute from way outside, but it was off target.

Kaya responded with a promising play as PFL top scorer Robert Lopez Mendy was able to breakaway for a one-on-one with JPV keeper Nelson Gasic but his shot was deflected for a corner kick.

In the third minute, a collision between Mendy and Gasic occurred. The JPV stopper was limping initially but seemed to be able to shake it off but Robert Mendy looked to have suffered worse knock. Eventually the target man from Senegal was able to shake off the the pain as match resumed.

In the sixth minute forward Takumi Uesato found strike partner Kennedy Uzoka with only Kaya’s net-minder, Ace Villanueva to beat but the Kaya keeper was able to divert the ball for a corner.

Suzuki Tsubasa followed up with an opportunity once again for JPBV but Villanueva still was able to deny the shot.

Three minutes after the quarter of an hour mark, Mendy seemed to have been pulled down in the box but referee was not convinced. JPV went immediately on the counter but Uzoka’s effort came to nothing.

A few moments after Mendy lashed on with an attempt in the box in the 21st minute but it did not have enough power as Gasic was able to easily collect.

Five minutes before half an hour has passed, Marwin Angeles took a chance but fired wide and off target.

Right in the next moment, Uzoka rose for a header that took Kaya’s defence by surprise, but it flew agonisingly wide.

A few more half chances came for both teams but in the goals did not arrive as the first half concluded on a stalemate.

In the second half, the attempts became even more at a premium as both squads now showing more discipline on the defensive end denying the channels that the attackers could exploit.

The gritty situation had been as such well into the hour mark as the goalless scoreline continued to persist.

However, in the 72nd minute Kaya had probably the best chance with Lopez Mendy connecting with the ball inside the area, but at a tight angle, but Nelson Gasic was able to collect for JPV.

But just three minutes later midfielder Alfred Osei finally got the breakthrough for Kaya Iloilo as he was able to volley the ball into the back of the net with a clever piece of individual skill in a play that was triggered by a corner kick play.

In the 79th minute JPV was able to come up with a promising effort to equalise with a powerful shot from the edge of the area but Ace Villanueva came up with a crucial block to avert a disastrous outcome.

Right at the 90th minute, JPV had their best opportunity to equalise as John Celiz produced a low bullet of a shot but Ace Villanueva was able to cushion under his control.

It would prove to be the last real chance of the Marikina club to get on the scoresheet, but it was not meant to be as the Iloilo-based outfit head home with a massive win that consolidates their hold of first place in Group B of the cup competition.
