Davao Aguilas, Stallion Laguna battle to a goalless Copa draw

AFC CL Final 1st Leg EXTENDED Highlights: Catch up ahead of the 2nd leg on SUNDAY

Davao Aguilas and Stallion Laguna head into the knockout stage of the Copa Paulino Alcantara after a goalless draw this Wednesday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Stallion Laguna looked the bit more dangerous in the first half as they look to get their second win of the campaign and improve their standing in Group A.

An early substitution was prompted for Stallion as Matthew Nierras was deemed unable to continue after suffering a knock as he was replaced by Reynald Villareal in just the 12th minute of the match.

Despite some promising plays and well taken shots by Stallion, with Jesus Melliza and Abou Sy coing up with their respective shots on goal, Davao Aguilas were able to keep it a stalemate courtesy of some crucial denials by Davao keeper Patrick Deyto.

Eventually, there was nothing to separate both squads as halftime arrived with no goals registered.

In the second half, Stallion were still the more aggressive of the two sides as they continued to search for the goal and the win.

Melliza once again came close well into the second half but his header missed the target.

Davao also had their chances, but Stallion were able to hold fast on the defensive end.

Late in the game, at around the 82nd minute, Matthew Hartmann came close to breaking the deadlock in favour of Davao but his effort was denied by the post.

With Coach Ernest Nierras’ men looking the hungrier side to get the win, the Laguna-based club continued the pressure until the end, but some wasted chances plus an inspired performance from Patrick Deyto eventually led to both sides sharing the spoils.

The result, with Davao Aguilas and Stallion Laguna only managing a goalless draw, means Ceres-Negros is officially out of contention in the cup.
